Off to the World Cup? Don't Score an Own Goal by Not Getting Covered!

LONDON, May 26 2006 --

A travel insurer is warning those heading off to the World Cup in a few weeks time not to rely solely on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for cover. That's because while it may have the word insurance in its title, the cover given by the EHIC just isn't as comprehensive as people may believe.

According to the Department of Health's website in Germany, even if you hold an EHIC, a visit to the doctor incurs a fixed charge which is non refundable. And if you require prescription drugs you will be charged a percentage of the cost which again is non refundable.

While if you have to go to hospital, to be covered by the EHIC you will first need to ensure it's a contracted one. And even then for those aged over 18, a fixed daily fee for the first 28 days of in-patient treatment will be charged which you will not be reimbursed for either.

All in all without travel insurance getting ill at the World Cup could see you landed with a big medical bill, which will be down to you to pay.

Perry Wilson, director of InsureandGo, said: "Whether you're off to Germany for a few days to see one game or you're planning to stay for the whole tournament, don't take the risk of not having travel insurance. "Having a EHIC is a good back up but people shouldn't think that because it has the word insurance in the title that it means that a travel policy isn't needed.

"With the EHIC you won't have a medical emergency line on hand 24 hours a day to take the worry away. And you also won't be covered should repatriation be required; if an item is lost or stolen or if you need to cancel your trip."

Cover from InsureandGo for three days in Europe (standard Silver cover) costs just GBP7.42 for an individual or single parent with up to three children and only GBP14.84 for a couple or family with up to six children. And for those travelling more than twice a year InsureandGo annual policies start from only GBP39 (standard Silver cover). Or try the companies below.
