private number plate The increasing popularity of exclusive personalised number plates has been spectacularly reflected in the number of record breaking prices paid in the last 12 months. A recent auction sale smashed the world record for the highest price ever paid for a personalised number plate.

At the sale held by Bonhams auctioneers at Goodwood on 7th July, the registration M 1 was purchased by an anonymous telephone bidder for an impressive £331,500. It was reported that the buyer, a wealthy businessman, had bought the plate as a birthday present for his young son. The previous record price for a car registration was the £285,000 paid for VIP 1 just a few weeks earlier.

The record for the most expensive UK plate has been broken several times in the last 12 months: earlier in the year 51 NGH sold for £254,000, while GS 1 sold in Scotland for £258,775 at the end of July 2005.

For some years the record holder was K1 NGS which sold for £231,000 in December 1993, but this sudden surge in the popularity of exclusive plates has now eclipsed that famous landmark.

Another revelation emerged from a survey conducted in 2005 by a major insurance company: surgeons are the professional group most likely to own personalised number plates.

This came as a surprise to many, who had assumed that the most prolific purchasers would be showbiz personalities and top businessmen.

Not only are more people investing more money in personal number plates, but the range of people sharing the interest is evidently becoming broader, with buyers from all walks of life visiting auctions and searching online for their perfect numbers.

The appeal of quality cherished car registrations has never been wider, and the investment opportunity they represent has never been better.
