Buy yourself a box at the Albert Hall...for £1.2million

Written by David Neville Williams

royal albert hallFor lovers of music and the grand atmosphere of the Royal Albert Hall, it’s the ultimate luxury.

You can buy your own box, complete with red seats and carpet, plus space for a dining table for up to 10 people or a bar...although it will cost you about the same as a luxury home in leafy Surrey.

The price tag for one of the largest boxes in the Albert Hall is £1.2million - but this brings automatic entry to the BBC Proms and performances of all the top music stars from Eric Clapton to Nigel Kennedy. So you can forget about queuing for tickets or chasing them on the internet.

The buyer will even be able to exchange glances with royalty because this exclusive box in the Grand Tier is on the same level as the 20-seat Queen's Box.

If you don't, however, want to lash out more than a million pounds, there are less expensive alternatives. There is another box, with eight seats, on the Loggia, the next level down, at £750,000 and a five-seater box directly above the Queen’s Box at £495,000. All three are for sale with 858 years left on the lease.

Whoever buys them will acquire a special place at one of the world’s best-known venues, with access to many of the biggest names in music, sport and entertainment.
Over the next few months they will enjoy one of the best views in the house for Jose Carreras, Jools Holland, Joan Baez, George Benson, Lou Reed, Echo & The Bunnymen and the Last Night Of The Proms.

Among more than 150,000 performances in the Albert Hall’s illustrious history, highlights have included the first sumo wrestling tournament held outside Japan, performances by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and the very first Miss World contest in 1969.

Of the venue’s 5,500 seats, about 1,200 are privately owned, having been sold off in the 19th century to help pay for the building‘s construction. Many have been passed from generation to generation of the same family. Unlike boxes at sporting venues such as Twickenham and the new Wembley Stadium, however, they are rarely available to buy.

The latest sale is being managed by Harrods Estates, whose marketing director, Shirley Humphrey, said: “This is the first time we have had the privilege of offering this range of seating, size and position in the hall and I believe it is highly unlikely that this situation will arise again soon. Clients will love entertaining their friends and family in one of these.“
