In smaller households, a good Personal Assistant can double up in the functions of a Household manager as most PA’s have the technical skills to run accounts, the kitchens, the gardeners etc. In larger estates, it is not unusual for the Household manager to be a dedicated role, usually of a supervisory nature overseeing other domestic or internal household departments. The skills required of a good Household manager involve administration, accuracy and speed – every employer wants everything done yesterday! A good Household Manager must also have an eye for detail, an understanding of luxury services and items, an understanding of protocol - as they never know who they may have to speak to next - be able to arrange dinner parties, flights, travel arrangements and even undertake some banking and certainly manage the domestic calendar. In smaller domestic situations the Houshold Manager will live out but in larger estates the position may even come with a house. In the UK salaries can vary from £35,000 to £100,000 and in the United States the figures are similar but in dollars as in $35,000 through $120,000 per annum. |
