HorseWorld is the leading UK charity caring exclusively for horses, ponies and donkeys. They rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals who have been abandoned, neglected or ill-treated.
HorseWorld's Visitor Centre in Bristol is a great place to meet the rescued horses and to see the work of the charity in action. You can enjoy a great day out for children and families while helping to support their vital work. HorseWorld is funded entirely through public donations. They have been established since 1952 to cope with the many working equines whose jobs had been replaced by motorised vehicles. Today, the majority of animals come to HorseWorld after being abandoned, mistreated or neglected, as retired racehorses or because their owner can no longer care for them. Their highly-trained staff are responsible for the upkeep of nearly 200 equines in the Welfare Department and monitor another 275 in loan homes around the country.
Set in beautiful stone farm-buildings on the southern edge of Bristol, HorseWorld's Visitor Centre is an award-winning attraction that offers a great day out for everyone. You can meet many of their equines close-up, learn their stories - and say hello to their non-horsey companions too. Up to 30 horses, ponies and donkeys are waiting to greet you. These furry friends are either permanent residents at HorseWorld or are undergoing rehabilitation work prior to rehoming. They have everything from amazing miniature ponies to mighty shire horses. And the equines have a variety of non-horsey companions too – ranging from pot-bellied pigs and goats to quails, parakeets and rabbits. Most of the animals are there to be touched and groomed – they enjoy meeting you as much you’ll enjoy meeting them. Some are so tame they even roam free around the yard, like Garth our famous free-range mule. As well as meeting the animals, you will learn their case histories from notes on their stable doors.
And at 11am and 2pm daily, they have presentations allowing their staff to tell you more about the work of HorseWorld whilst showing you some of their animals at exercise. Little ones can let off steam in their play barn and straw den. There are also seasonal tractor tours and you can hold your child’s birthday party at HorseWorld. Rescuing scores of horses who have suffered abandonment and neglect is an important part of HorseWorld’s work. As all of the horses they receive will be with us because they either suffered abuse or were beyond the capability of their owners to care for, each one needs its own programme of rehabilitation.
HorseWorld is not an equine retirement home and the vast majority of our animals are rehomed. They operate alongside a large number of other charities and statutory bodies in their work rescuing and rehoming equines. Support Us. HorseWorld receives no government funding or lottery grants. They need your help to ensure happy, healthy and secure futures for the horses, ponies and donkeys in our care. There are a number of ways that you can help us to help horses in need.
