Salzburg

Mozart's city of Salzburg is a delightful destination. The combination of a stay, a Private Jet experience and a memorable journey on the Orient-Express, creates a perfect four-day Flight of Fantasy. The nostalgic rail journey takes you through the majestic alpine scenery of Austria and Switzerland.

Your stay in Salzburg will be at the renowned Sacher Hotel. The highlight of your stay in the city will be a horse-drawn carriage ride to Hellbrunn Castle for a private Mozart Concert and a Gala Banquet.

Salzburg, one of Europe's finest cities, has a special place in the world of music as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is delightful, charming and pleasingly compact. The town occupies both banks of the River Salzach and its panorama, with the Hohensalzburg Castle dominating the towers and domes of the city, against a backdrop of the Alps, is one of unforgettable beauty.

The romantic old town, clustered on the left bank of the river, is a small area of narrow medieval streets, arcaded courtyards and tall slim buildings. The most famous of these streets is the Getreidegasse, now a pedestrian area, lined with houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, exclusive boutiques and coffee-houses. There will be a short walking tour of the old town to include Mozart's House

The King of Trains

On 4 October 1883 the first Orient-Express train service was inaugurated, but it was the 1920s and 1930s which were the heyday of the legendary train. Elaborate meals, decadent company and fine wines characterised this era of rail travel. Royalty, celebrities, courtesans and spies intermingled as they travelled in opulence throughout Europe.

The Second World War put paid to all of this, and although the Orient-Express continued to operate until May 1977, its final run consisted of just one shabby sleeping car and three day cars. The fabled train was however saved by entrepreneur and rail enthusiast, James B. Sherwood. In 1977 he purchased two of the train's carriages at a Sotheby's auction in Monte Carlo.

The next few years and US$16 million were spent locating, purchasing and restoring some 35 vintage sleepers, Pullmans and restaurant cars and on 25 May 1982 the legend was reborn when the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express made its maiden run from London to Venice. Today, these gleaming carriages continue to transport passengers across Europe in exquisite surroundings on one of the most romantic journeys in the world.

British Pullman Train

In the twenties and thirties the railways were in their heyday, famous Pullman trains like the Brighton Belle and the Golden Arrow were patronised by the privileged, and frequently used by Royalty and visiting heads of state. One sat in a plushly upholstered armchair in a carriage made opulent by exquisite marquetry, mosaic floors, ornate brass accoutrements, lace antimacassars, starched white tablecloths and delicate china.

Now the identical experience is yours to savour in these original Pullman Cars restored by craftsmen to priceless splendour. Each carriage has its own name, its unique personality and its own colourful history. As you step aboard, stewards, resplendent in immaculate uniforms, welcome you and show you to your seat. The service will be calm and unruffled and the cuisine a delight as we transport you to another age while England's countryside unfolds past your window.

Hotel Sacher - Salzburg

 hotel sacher salzberg

The Hotel Sacher, a grand turn-of-the-century hotel, is centrally located on the banks of the River Salzach. Originally opened in 1866, the hotel has continuously maintained impeccably high standards and it still reflects the luxury, tradition and atmosphere of those bygone days.

In particular the hotel offers splendid views of the historic heart of the old town, which is only a few minutes walk away across a footbridge over the river. The rooms have been recently renovated and are each individually furnished with antiques, original paintings and marble baths, all in keeping with the style of the architecture.
