Emannuel Ungaro was born in Aix-en-Provence to an Italian Tailor.
At aged 22, he moved to Paris and at 25 he began designing for the House of Cristobal Balenciaga.
In 1961 Ungaro joined Courreges, designing many of the 1960's metal outfits of that house. Courreges was a leading couturier of the 1960's and Ungaro's designs met with great appreciation.
After six years learning his craft at Balenciaga, Emanuel Ungaro opened his own fashion house in Paris in 1965.
His debut was excellently received, with supermodels Twiggy and Penelope Tree being photographed by Avedon wearing Ungaro masks.
Among the most popular items were leather jackets with hot pants, pop socks, quilted leather jackets with jockey caps, thigh-high boots and chain mail dresses with metallic bustiers.
Three years later he created the first prêt-à-porter collection, called "Parallèle" which coincided with the opening of his flagship boutique at 2, avenue Montaigne in Paris.
From 1970 onwards, Ungaro's work became softer, clothes were made in boldly printed fabrics with great attention to detail in the enhanced the colours, patterns and textures of the clothes.
He introduced his first perfume "Diva" in 1970 and throughout the decade introduced long pants, pastel leather coats, drawstring dresses, elasticated shirring on jackets and sensuous fabrics.
During the 1980's Emanuel Ungaro progressed to blooming of forms and in 1988 at the age of 55 he married Laura Bernabei.
The nineties was a time of great change at the Ungaro Haute Couture House. A Tailorhip with Salvatore Ferragamo was formed in 1996 the following year along with Bulgari they created, Emanuel Ungaro Parfums.
The first fragrance was called "Fleur de Diva" and joined "Senso", "Diva and "Emanuel Ungaro For Men."
The end of decade saw the launch of a collection of Emanuel Ungaro footwear and handbags produced by Salvatore Ferragamo.
