Christian Lacroix

Christian was born on May 16, 1951 in Arles, France.

He studied Art History at the University of Montpellier and continued his studies in Paris at both the Sorbonne and the Ecole du Louvre and at this point his ambition was to become a museum curator.
lacroixIt was in Paris that he met Françoise, his future wife, who encouraged him to draw and Jean-Jacques Picart, an advisor to several Designers and Haute Couture Houses, who found him a job at Hermès in 1978 and then with Guy Paulin in 1980.

He began working at the Jean Patou House in 1981.

After collaboration with Jean-Jacques Picart he took up the challenge of Haute Couture.

Both designers managed to define 1980s fashion with bright colors and extravagance.

In 1986 they were awarded their first Dé d’Or and in 1987 they received the Award for the most influential foreign designer, given by the CFDA in New York.

In 1987 after meeting Bernard Arnault, the House of Christian Lacroix was founded at 73 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré in Paris

His second collection, in January 1988, was awarded a Dé d’Or. 1988, Christian Lacroix created his first ready to wear fashion collection. The following year saw him move into accessories and open boutiques in France, UK, Switzerland and Japan.


In 1994, Christian Lacroix created his “Bazar” line this a third line of clothing ran alongside his ready-to wear and haute couture lines.

The following year witnessed the launch of the CL linen and towel collection. By 1996 Christian Lacroix had created a jeans collection and after collaboration with the Christofle House 1997 saw an Art de la Table collection.

The last year of the nineties saw him launch Christian Lacroix.

In 2000 a silver and semiprecious stone jewelry line was launched followed the year after with a childrens line.

Christian Lacroix prodigious output did not stall here and 2002 saw the launch of the “Bazar” perfume for women and men. With the presentation of his spring-summer 2003 collections and the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Christian Lacroix he received the insignia of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. In 2004 Christian Lacroix created a lingerie line and a menswear line.

The Christian Lacroix House has approximately 60 points of sale in France and a further 1,000 points of sale throughout the world.
