Born in New York in 1963, Marc Jacobs has enjoyed a meteoric rise including being design director for Louis Vuitton. He is the head designer for his own label Marc Jacobs, as well as the diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs

He graduated in 1981 from the High School of Art and Design in New York City. Jacobs then stiuied at Parsons School for Design. During his time there he won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award in 1984 and in the same year was also awarded the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award.

In 1986, backed by Onward Kashiyama USA, Inc., Jacobs designed his first collection bearing the Marc Jacobs label. In 1987 Jacobs was the youngest designer to have ever been awarded the fashion industry's highest tribute, The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.

In 1993, Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. launched their own licensing and design company: Marc Jacobs International Company, L.P. in partnership with Robert Duffy. They also opened the first Marc Jacobs free standing store on Mercer Street in New York’s Soho district, the same year. 

In 1997, Jacobs was appointed Creative Director of luxury French fashion house, Louis Vitton, where he created the company's first ready-to-wear line. Jacobs is known for collaborating with many well known artists for his Louis Vuitton collections. He has worked with Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakamiand most recently American artists Richard Prince and Kanye West.

Marc by Marc Jacobs, was lauched in 2001. He has gone on to win seven CFDA awards including Womenswear Designer of the Year, Accessories Designer of the Year and Menswear designer of the year.

In 2007 a full line of children’s wear, aptly named Little Marc Jacobs was launched. 

In 2009 Jacobs was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA in America. The company has expanded to more than 100 stores worldwide.
