Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth. Also nominated for 'I'm Not There'

Nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced January 22 by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis and Oscar winner Kathy Bates.

Cate Blanchett was nominated for two Oscars, putting the Australian actress on track to make Academy Awards history if she manages to pick up both. She was nominated for her leading role in Elizabeth - The Golden Age and supportting role in 'I'm Not There'.

In the early days people thought Robert's birthdate was the 29th of January because of an error by the local priest. We now know of course it was the 25th of January!

It was a bleak Golden Globes awards but at least the best film won - Atonement.

Ian McEwan is certainly Britain's finest living writer and it's fitting that he should win this further triumph. Let's hope he goes on to achieve an Oscar.
