Russians truly love ballet and opera and seats are cheap, but considerably more expensive for Westerners (there is a very strict ticketing system in place and you will not be allowed in if you buy a 'Russian' ticket from a tout) Ask the hotel concierge for tickets. Make sure you ask for tickets next to each other if you're with a partner or friends - otherwise they're sold one behind the other.

Hermitage Theatre

The Hermitage Theatre is the oldest building in a complex of the Winter Palace. The decoration of the theatre and its halls is unique and represents a classical masterpiece of palace architecture of the 18th century. The small court theatre (only 250 seats) was initially intended for the imperial family and selected court noblesse.
The Theatre is presently used as the lecture hall for the State Hermitage Museum and as the stage for the ballet performances, chamber music recitals, and opera performances.
