Prague History

prague_city_view

Since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, Prague has opened like a flower to reveal its rich architectural heritage. As of 1 May 2004, the Czech Republic is part of the European Union (EU).

From Gothic fourteenth-century flourishes to Cubist, Functionalist and Art Deco styles, Prague is a visual treat.

Embracing the world wholeheartedly (Prague was elected European City of Culture in 2000), Prague is the cultural, political and economic capital of the Czech Republic, located at the heart of Central Europe.

Talking of flooding, the severe 2002 inundation is but the most recent challenge to 'The City of One Hundred Towers and Spires' which has withstood war, oppression and Acts of God since its foundation in the 9th century AD. Today, it is one of Europe's most appealing cities.

Nestled in a valley and bisected by the Vltava River, Prague is at its best in early spring (both for the weather and to catch the annual Spring Festival of classical music) and the late autumn. The mean temperature is 9°C. Temperatures climb to 19°C in July and drop to -9°C in January.
