In single and some twin engine aircraft, the propeller engine is still the most popular type.
It's easy to build, relatively cheap to run and is sufficient for the power needs of the small aircraft or flying enthusiast.
In essence it is no more different than a motor car engine with a propeller in front.
These engines are only capable of carrying a small number of passengers over short distances.
As the aircraft becomes larger and distances greater, the need for Turboprops and Turbofan engines take over.
